“A Cannabinoid Hypothesis of Schizophrenia: Pathways to Psychosis”

Presentation:

Observations regarding drug-induced psychotic states led to the dopamine, serotonin, and glutamate hypotheses of schizophrenia. Expanding knowledge about the endocannabinoid system and the impact of exogenous Phyto cannabinoids on the brain and behavior have revealed several putative pathways to cannabis-induced psychosis. The presentation describes these pathways, proposes a cannabinoid hypothesis of schizophrenia and discusses targeted therapeutic interventions.

Objectives:

  1. Examine the Epidemiology of Cannabis Use and its Relationship to Psychosis
  2. Review the Neurobiology of the Endocannabinoid System
  3. Illuminate the Pathways to Cannabis-Induced Psychosis
  4. Examine Strategies for Managing Cannabis Use and Preventing Psychosis Relapse
